5th Grade Blue Brings Home a Trophy

First Place for 5th Grade Blue

Coach Tony Griffith lead his team into a gruelling three game tournament on Saturday in Panama, OK.  The sun was out after a morning of rain, raising the humidity to about 120%.  Greenwood played three games in little more than three hours, taking on all challengers to bring home first place.

Spiro was up first, and fell 10 - 0 to a strong Greenwood rushing game, with huge chunks of yardage coming from #22 Hunter Pogue.  The offensive line created openings up the middle, and made huge holes in the Spiro defense for the backs to sprint through.

Greenwood’s defense was solid throughout the game, contributing to the score board with a 2 point safety on a backfield tackle from #6 Dillon McBride.

Quarterback #11 Jax Burgess had a complete game, managing the offense with his arm and legs, running effectively and hitting his Wide Receiver #10 Blaise Lohman on a down field completion.

Pocola brought in a strong team full of mostly 6th graders to try and knock off the mighty 5th Grade Blue.  Pocola met the same fate as Spiro, shutout and defeated 8 – 0.  Coach Griffith said he couldn’t have been more proud of his team, and contributed the victories to hard work the boys put in all summer.

People don’t understand how much effort these kids put out to play football.  They practiced all summer in the Fast-Dogs program and Pad-Camp.  They deserve a lot of credit.“  said Coach Griffin in an interview.

The championship game was played only 15 minutes after the game with Pocola, setting the stage for a battle between Greenwood and home team Panama.  The Blue Squad prevailed in overtime, by another shutout performance, grabbing the tournament trophy with a 6 – 0 victory.

Player That Caught Our Eye:  D-Mac – #6 Dillon McBride.  Could it be a mysterious power in the nickname?  D-Mac showed diesel truck power going up the middle, and indy car speed going around the corners.  He’s gonna be tough to stop.

News and Notes:  Check out the new Player Biographies Page.  The players fill out their own information about themselves, which makes for some great reading!  We’ll be updating teams regularly.

3rd Grade White vs. Panama

PittBulls 3rd Grade White first scrimmage.

On a day that was overcast and sprinkling rain the 3rd grade white came out of the gates a little sluggish. On the first snap of the game quarterback Jake Smith lost the handle of the ball from Levi Hicks, Panama recovered.

The second play from scrimmage Panama’s running back took the ball 38 yards for the score. After a few encouraging words from the coaches the offense came back out onto the field filled with enthusiasm ready to go score. The ball they were playing with was very wet, causing the ball to come free for the second turnover of the game.

After the turnover, White found themselves down 8 -0, and the defense was heading back onto the field, this is where the guys stepped up and started hitting people.

The player that caught our eye: Ethan Escalante was flying around the field making tackles. Causing the other coach to have the game stopped to check Ethan’s shoe’s for jet packs.

The defense played very well the rest of the game only giving up a few yards. The team really showed improvement. Brayden Cullen and Weston Cumbie stepped up and did a good job helping out with tackles.

The Offense showed signs of improvement the second half, and being there first game, in real game time situations they did very well. This team has a lot of talent on the field and it should show when they get a little more practice and game experience.

News and Notes:  Next article is 5th Grade Blue… Check back to see how they did Saturday, and who caught our eye.

4th Grade White Looks Good in Scrimmage

Against Pocola and Panama…

Richie Taylor’s 4th Grade White Squad played Saturday, August 23rd in another rainy event, this time in Pocola, OK. The unusual August weather continues to give us an October football feeling. Greenwood fans enjoyed the cool weather from under their umbrellas, protecting them from off and on light rain.

The 4th Grade White came out firing against Pocola in the 10:00 am scrimmage, playing under practice like conditions and rules. Each team received the ball on the opponents 40, then played regular rules, (with a bit of slack for false starts, etc…).

Greenwood took the first possession and quickly crossed the goal line on a four play drive, highlighted by a 32 yard dash for a TD by running back Payton Taylor. Pocola took over on the 4o and tried to answer. Greenwood’s defense slipped momentarily and left Pocola’s running back sprinting for the endzone. After a 35 yard chase, Pocola’s ball carrier was caught from behind by Haley Rice who helped make the tackle, and recovered the ensuing fumble on the 2 yard line to save a touchdown.

Greenwood’s defense would not fail again. Pocola did not threaten for the rest of the game, constantly swarmed by a motivated Greenwood D. Through the two 15 minute halves, Pocola only made 2 first downs, and never again crossed the 25 yard line. Greenwood shut out Pocola, and took the victory by two scores.

Panama promptly took the field after a 20 minute break between games for the 4th Grade White Squad. Greenwood seemed like they were just warming up when their second straight game started. Quarterback Michael Panis lead the team on the field to start right where they left off. The Pittbulls overpowered Panama throughout the scrimmage, but two costly fumbles gave the game away.

Player that caught our eye: Payton Taylor. This kid needs a nickname… like “Night Train.” He was unstoppable. Taylor had two touchdown runs of 32 yards and 35 yards, breaking tackles on each, then sprinting for daylight. He refused to be tackled, and couldn’t be caught once free.

Blue Teams Practice

News and Notes from Thursday’s Blue Practice

Pittbulls Blue practiced Thursday, August 21st at Wells Middle School Field, under stormy skies and cool weather. Rain soaked the field throughout the day, then let up right as practice began. The sun peeked through the clouds just as whistles began blowing.

Coaches split up the Blue squads by grades and began practice at 6:00pm. The 3rd and 4th graders worked on fundamentals, while the 5th and 6th graders worked on scrimmages.  Parents tailgated on the sidelines watching the little kids learn where to line up, and the big kids get reminded of how much they enjoy Up-Downs.

Practice moved fast and looked like a well organized show of plays being run, tackles made, and a constant flow of players on punishment laps going round & round.

Not all of the “little kids” are so little. Coach Tate Cole’s 3rd Grade Squad has a “Ryno” at running back in Ryan Daggs. It’s all about the nicknames..

Coach Brian Clay has a 4th grader named “Bassboat” – Ryan “Taco Tongue” Padilla plays for Coach Griffith on the 5th Grade Team – and there’s even a “D-Mac” carrying the ball.

Jax Burgess had an impressive day at QB for Coach Griffith’s 5th grade squad, including a 30 yard bomb that beat triple coverage.

Player that caught our eye: Easton Barrett on Coach Cole’s 3rd grade team. Barrett worked hard under the instruction from Coach Mike Whitson and looks like he’ll make an impact this season.

Notes: No team pictures this Saturday. Check back for updates on a re-schedule day.

Practice Begins for White

Pittbulls Start Preparing…

for the opening games in less than three weeks. Tuesday’s practice was held under gray skies in unusually cool conditions. The feel of football season was evident in August, with the weather acting more like October.

Clint Watson’s White squad ran an up-tempo two hour practice at the Boys & Girls Club. Players were broke down into groups and getting individual coaching on postion play.

The 3rd and 4th Grade White squads practiced together, working in small groups with position coaches. There were definately some big hits going on at Coach Ritchie Taylor’s section, pitting linebackers against running backs in tackling drills. Coach Taylor fired up the players and the onlooking parents with his signature voice shouting praises for pad popping hits.

One of the standouts in practice was Haley Rice. A speedy youngster with obvious athletic ability, and a blonde pony tail sticking out of the back of her helmet. We’ll keep our eye on Rice.
