3rd Grade Blue v. Sallisaw

Sallisaw Proves to be too much for Pitbulls

The undefeated Sallisaw Black Diamonds 3rd Grade team woke up Saturday morning, shaved their chins, had coffee, chopped up a few ricks of firewood and went lion hunting with bowie knives before they drove to Greenwood.  No parents showed up.  The kids just drove themselves.  One kid got pulled over by Greenwood Police, but the cop wasn’t big enough to arrest the kid, so he just let him go.

Sallisaw was big.  Get it?  BIG.

(The Pitbulls looked good in photos though!)

5th Grade Blue v. Sallisaw

The Perfect Season Continues…

Coach Tony Griffin’s blood pressure seemed to be a bit higher than normal Saturday night at Smith Robinson Stadium, as he looked across the field at a very strong Sallisaw Black Diamond squad.  His 5th Grade Blue Pitbulls had a serious challenge ahead of them.

Throughout this undefeated season we have become accustom to Jax and Hunter and D-Mac being recognized, but Saturday night was highlighted by the big boys up front, and some smaller boys who really stepped up.

#53 Remington Griffith and beside him, #52 Hayden Holmberg had great performances on the offensive line.  Speedy #10 Blaise Lohman had a break out game carrying the ball.

The big hit of the night came from #8 Bryce Allen.  Allen punched through the running lane and met helmet to helmet with the charging Sallisaw running back.  The pads popped as Bryce Allen drove the runner into his own backfield.

#35 Zach Burch and #18 Braxton Ketter also had great performances on patrol at the linebacker and defensive end positions.

The victory was still in jeopardy late into the 4th quarter until the Blue Squad sustained a long pounding drive, running time off the clock, and finding the endzone on a 4th down run of 10 yards by Quarterback Zac Burgess.

The Pitbulls took the victory in a hard fought contest, and remain undefeated.  Coach Griffith refused to take credit for a well coached game saying afterwards, “These kids are my heroes.”

The victory sets up what many believe will be the game of the night next Saturday, when Blue faces White in the finale of the season for the 5th Graders.

White Pittbulls Stop Stilwell

Article by Denny Bland

The 6th Grade White once again hit the road this week to Stillwell, OK and they once again controlled the host team in an easy 35 to 12 victory. The host team evidently failed to hear the air raid sirens as the Pittbulls hit town. Greenwood blitzed the Indians behind the arm of quarterback Reid Wheeler and a defense that gift-wrapped turnovers and field position all night long.

From the opening kick, which Kyler Watson returned all the way down to the 5 yard line. This game was never in doubt. Tanner Cooper scored easily on a run and the PAT was missed to make the score 6-0. The Indians then got their shot but Trey Hamilton made a big hit on the first offensive play and created a fumble that Kolten Hughes pounced on. Wheeler then connected on a long pass to Seth Bland to the 14 yard line. Hughes would sprint in from there and Drew Ulmer added the PAT to make it 14-0. The rout was on. On the Indian’s next series, the defense once again created a turnover after some tough tackles by Nick Walton and Tyler Cox. Stilwell botched a pitched and Bland recovered for the Pittbulls. This time Greenwood misfired and coughed one up back to Stilwell. With 2:01 left still in first quarter, Stillwell was not having any success on the stubborn Pittbulls. They gained no positive yards on three straight plays including a huge sack by Tanner Wiley. The Indians were forced to punt on 4th and 22.

Greenwood then went offensive again, this time behind the strong legs of Cooper and Wiley on long runs of 25 and 15 yards. Then, Jordan McKinley got in the act with hard nosed runs and with 5:11 left in the second quarter bulled his way in for a touchdown. Cox would add the PAT to make the score 22 to zip. The Indians got the ball yet again to give it right back to an opportunistic Pittbull team. Garrett Miller stepped in front of a pass and returned in deep in Indian territory. Wheeler wasted no time and threw a beautiful pass over the top of the defense to Hughes who got well behind the secondary. Hughes second touchdown made the score 28-0 with 3:50 to go in the half as the PAT failed. The Indians would try yet again only to lose another fumble but got a favorable call. Stilwell had nothing though and a punt right before half gave the ball back to the potent Pittbulls offense. Greenwood would take over from their own 37 with 1:29 to go and after a long run by Cooper. Wheeler threw another lightning bolt to Brandon Tolbert and he hauled in the pass and made a nice run for a score from 45 yards out. Trey Hamilton added the PAT run to make the score 35 to zip.

Greenwood rested the second half and put the game on cruise control. Stilwell added a couple of meaningless scores and the final would be 35-12. The White Pittbulls moved to 5-3 on the year. They will face their toughest challenge in the year Saturday

White Sixth Grade Swarm Westville

Article by Denny Bland

The 6th Grade White made the long trek to Westville, OK Saturday night and came away with an easy win. The visiting Pittbulls made quick work of the host Yellow Jackets. Greenwood was clicking on both sides of the ball with lightning quick scores and a stifling defense. The end result would be the White’s 4th victory on the year with a 28 to 6 win.

Greenwood took the opening kick and immediately marched down the field. The running backs, Tanner Cooper and Tanner Wiley, gashed the Jackets from the onset. Reid Wheeler used a pass to Kyler Watson to setup a short yardage situation that Cooper broke lose for a huge gain to the goal line. Wiley would mop up with the game’s first score but his PAT would fail to notch it 6-0. Preceding the kick, the defense made their presence known by allowing no positive yardage and forcing a punt. Greenwood could not capitalize though and traded possessions. On their third possession, the PIttbulls would use Ty Wyckoff on the ground first with a 25 yard gain on a reverse. Next, Cooper would knife thru for another 12 yards and then Wheeler would throw a pretty one to Wyckoff for a 30 yard completion. This would set up Wheeler’s first touchdown pass of the night to Watson and the PAT was successful to move to 14-0.

The defense once again allowed no positive yardage led by Drew Ulmer, who seemed to be in the backfield all night. The Pittbulls would force a punt right before half and go to work yet again. After good first down yardage runs by Wiley and Jordan McKinley, Cooper would make a 20 yard run keystone cops would be jealous of. Wyckoff would pad his multi-purpose stats with another 11 yard run. Then, Wheeler threw his second touchdown pass to Seth Bland with just under 28 seconds in the half. The score at the break would be 20-0 as the PAT failed.

In the second frame, Greenwood would stake its final score much like it did in the first half, with ground control runs by Cooper, Wiley and Brandon Tolbert. Then yet another 30 yard pass as Wheeler would go over the top to Wyckoff again. Cooper would set up another Wiley touchdown, the second on the night for him. Tyler Cox would add the PAT to make it 28 to nothing. Greenwood would back off the throttle and coast from there. Westville added a late meaningless score before time expired. Their PAT would fail making the final 28-6.

Greenwood’s “big donkeys” comprised of Cox, Ulmer, Trey Hamilton, Nick Walton, and Nick Houston paved the way all night for the playmakers. They gave plenty of time and the ground game blew up the Jackets.  The win moved the Pittbulls to a record of 4-2 on the year. The White will travel to Stilwell, OK in their final tune-up before their showdown with an unbeaten Greenwood Blue in the season finale.

6th Grade Blue v. Sallisaw

October 25th at Smith Robinson Stadium

The Sallisaw Black Diamonds rolled into Greenwood on cattle trucks because a bus was too small to hold the massive 6th graders.  During pre-game warm ups Greenwood’s monster players, Korban Waldemar and Shawn Youngwolfe even said, “Dang those guys are big!”

After the game it was Sallisaw’s turn to comment when one Black Diamond player was heard saying, “Dang those guys hit hard.”

The mighty 6th Grade Blue kept their perfect season in tact on Saturday night, rolling over a very good Sallisaw team at home in the friendly confines of Smith Robinson.

Max Gross lead the offensive scoring, highlighted by a 65 yard sprint to paydirt around the left side of the offensive line.  Chris Sunde and Kevin Jones also added to the scoreboard with touchdown runs of their own.

The Pitbull defense held Sallisaw to a shutout until late in the 4th quarter when the Black Diamond mounted a good drive for a confidence building touchdown, but it was nothing more than that as far as the game score.

Several players who have not seen much playing time this year stepped up and made some big contributions to the game, particularly on special teams and defense.

Number 12, Pierce Evans turned in a great performance, hustling on every play and laying a huge hit on the Sallisaw running back late in the game.

Next week the Blue Squad faces their final test, and probably their toughest opponent of the year against Greenwood White.  It will be the battle of the “Pitbull Seniors” that we’ve been waiting for.

5th Grade Blue handles Boonville

5th Grade travels to Hartford to take on the Boonville Bearcats in a Defensive struggle:

On another great night to play football the 5th grade Blue team traveled to Hartford to take on the very talented Boonville Bearcats..

Offense moved the ball  down the field on there first drive with JaxBurgess ending the drive with a 20 yard touchdown scamper. The offensive line was outsized but showed a lot of heart through the game as they opened up holes for the Hunter Pogue and Dillon “D-mac” McBride to get through. Seemed the Pittbulls moved the ball up and down the field all night before stalling deep into Bearcat territory. Late in the game the Offensive line blocked to perfection as they sprang D-Mac to the outside for a 20 yard touchdown run. All you could see coming to the outside was the red shoes, that threw the bearcats off enough for him to almost go untouched into the endzone..

On the Defensive side of the ball, It was great the Bearcats was off their game all night with the speed and great defensive pursuit of the Pittbulls, Jacob McClure and Grant Griffin led the way all night with speed and great defense, All the defensive line needs to be congratulated they stuffed the run and made the quarterback throw the ball before he wanted to.

Overall, another dominating effort by the 5th grade blue, going up against an older bigger Boonville team..

Congrats Pittbulls, Play well Saturday!

5th Grade White Defeats Westville in a Defensive Slug Fest:

Article by:  ERIC SHAFFER

In the shadow of staggering losses by the 3rd and 4th grade White Pittbull teams, the 5th grade White Pittbulls squared off against a bigger, seemingly daunting opponent in the Westville Yellow Jackets.  The Pittbulls proved to be the fiercest warriors on the field defeating Westville in gut wrenching, snot busting bash fest on the gridiron.

The Pittbulls approached the field, their resolve apparent, in the upcoming battle with Westville.  The Pittbulls took the ball to open the game.  The game soon developed into a battle for dominion of epic proportions.  Late in the first quarter, Westville strikes and draws first blood.  However, they are unable to execute and score the 2 point conversion.  Up to this point, the game has been a battle of wills starting at the line of scrimmage and radiating outward, encapsulating all players on the field, on the sidelines, the coaches and all spectators in the stands.  The game engulfed all those participating, both playing and watching.  Early in the second quarter, Quinton Marrone ran a 40 yard Touch Down run.  On the foot of Alex Elmore, the 2 point conversion attempt splits the uprights giving the Pittbulls a 2 point lead, 8 to 6.  As the first half wears on, the Pittbull defense continues to inflict pain on the Westville offense.  Both #99 Dustin McGowan and #53 Travis Freeman pounded the offensive line, pressuring Westville and making big stops.  With 15 seconds remaining in the first half, Westville high snaps the ball to the kicker, too high for him to control and he has to drop on the ball.  The Pittbulls take over deep in Westville territory.  Unable to capitalize on the turnover, the first half ends with the Pittbulls up by 2.

On the opening drive of the second half, Westville was held to a 3 and out by the Pittbulls.  In the succeeding drives, the Pittbulls moved the ball well and dominated the field in first downs and time of possession.  The Pittbulls were able to air it out and managed to continue their dominance in the air as well as on the ground.  But, the Pittbulls were unable to capitalize and open it up on the scoreboard.  Westville, proved to be defiant enough to prevent the Pittbull offense from gaining entry into the Red Zone Holy Land.  As the game wore on and the clock wound down, the war was one of wills, not bodies.  The battle had unfolded into a see-saw of offensive gains and defensive stops for both squads.  The whole Defense is to be commended for making big stops and ensuring the victory.  Bodies were sacrificed to ensure the game would end victorious for the Pittbulls, leaving sheer will their only driving force.  Late in the 4th quarter, the game developed into a red zone stand by both teams with Westville knocking at the door and the Pittbulls standing in the way.  With 2 minutes left in the game, the final battle for dominance waged from the 13 yard line to the end zone, deep in Pittbull territory.  Again, the waltz of gain and loss was danced almost as though accompanied by a symphony.  Once again, the Pittbulls prove to be too resilient, and end the day shutting Westville down, ending the war, victorious.

Offensive players of the week are Brian Pullen and Quinton Marrone.  Defensive players of the week are Ben Wood and Jacob Burch.

4th White Mangles Mansfield

A Thursday Night Special!

Richie Taylor’s 4th Grade White welcomed Mansfied to Smith Robinson for a Thursday Night Scrimmage under the lights.  Greenwood jumped on the visiting Tigers on the opening drive, and never let off the gas pedal until the Tigers called the game with 4 minutes of regulation to go.  Although no scoreboard was used to keep track, Mansfield knew they had had enough, and the Tiger coaches called it quits with the score somewhere around 30 – 6.

Play of the Game:

It was first and goal for Greenwood on the six inch line.  In an attempt to motivate his team, Coach Taylor announced to the entire stadium that the play would be a “Quarterback keeper, up the middle, and it’ll be on one!”  he shouted for all to hear.  The Pitbulls looked at the coach as if to say, “Uh, Coach?  They heard that.”  Taylor repeated the play even louder and added, “Get up there and whip somebody!”  Both teams crowded the center of the field.  The Mansfield Coaches shouted to the Tigers “He’s not kidding!  Plug the middle!”   The teams approached each other and lined up like lions vs. hyenas over a fresh kill.  Zac Bodirsky knew what was at stake…

…the pride of Greenwood was on the line.  Mansfield was up to the challenge, sending a flood of red jerseys through the middle of the Greenwood line.  On second down the Pitbulls lined up as if to go for the same play, but ran a toss right for a wide open touchdown.

The victory made two wins in a row for the 4th Grade White beating Hartford on Tuesday and Mansfield on Thursday.  Saturday the team travels to Westville to resume conference play.

6th Grade Blue: If you can’t run with the Big Dogs, Stay on the porch!

6th Grade Blue: If you can’t run with the Big Dogs, Stay on the porch!

On a beautiful night at Ramsey Jr high in Fort Smith the 6th grade blue team shows Union Christian who the big dogs are.

From the opening kick off things looked great for the 6th grade team, Union makes its first mistake of the night by kicking the ball right to the red shoed lightning quick Max Gross.

Max took the opening kickoff back for a score to totally stun the Union team.

With Quarter Back Kevin Jones and RB’s Chris Sunde and John Sisco, clicking on all cylinders the 6th grade blue rolled over Union all night on offense scoring several times and having to punt very few times.

The Defense looked great the linebackers were led by Tanner Chapple and the D line was led by a big hitting Alik Cooper.

The defense only allowed 12 points in the game and one touchdown was late in the game when the Blue already had the win in the bag.

This 6th grade blue team looked very though to beat, and Union put up a great effort but fell well short of making the game close.. In the end the Pittbull defense was just too tough, and with an Offense clicking on all cylinders looked to be unstoppable.

White Pittbulls Muzzle Pointers

Article by Denny Bland

Saturday evening at Smith Robinson Stadium, the sixth grade White Pittbulls swept yet another Van Buren team by closing out the day’s slate against the Green team 16-6. The Pittbulls benefited greatly by a healthy return of several players and staked an early lead and then held on for the win.

The Pittbulls would recover a Pointer onside kick and immediately a healthy Reid Wheeler would take over the reigns on the offense. After both teams traded field positions in the opening frame, Greenwood would strike first in the second quarter. Greenwood used the ground attack of the “Tanners,” Cooper and Wiley, to set up the pass first from Wheeler to Kyler Watson on a good gain. Then, after a good 12 yard gain by Wiley. Wheeler would complete a strike to a wide open Seth Bland for six in the end zone. Tanner Wiley would add the PAT kick to notch the score 8 to zip.

On the defensive side, the Pittbulls did not allow much breathing room. The linebacker corps of Wiley, Trey Hamilton, Garrett Miller, Brandon Tolbert and Jordan McKinley enjoyed a steady diet of Pointer Green.

Hamilton especially ate them up like he was at an all you can eat buffet. Greenwood stuffed their opponent’s next drive and held on downs. Greenwood would go into the bag of tricks to catch a lackadaisical secondary napping. Facing a long third down, Wiley would take a pitch from Wheeler and air a long pass to a speedy Ty Wyckoff, for huge gain. Greenwood wasted no time as Cooper would find a nice size hole on the left and go in basically untouched for a 13 yard score. Drew Ulmer added the PAT to make it 16 to 0 to close out the scoring for the half.

Following halftime, the Pittbulls went on cruise control. Van Buren controlled the ball the whole third quarter while several Pittbulls got some much deserved playing time. Hayden Keith, Nick DeMaria, Mason Cantrell, Jerod Powell, Andrew Wise, Zac Wood, Jarrett Sebo, Evan McClure and Tristan Brasher were just a few contributors on the that saw significant action. Offensively, Greenwood put the brakes on and with limited snaps did not really sniff the end zone again. Perhaps, Greenwood called the dogs off a little early as Van Buren would score late on a long pass to make it 16-6 as the PAT failed. Then recovered an onsides kick and threatened yet again before the Pittbulls squashed the drive to preserve the win.

Offensively, Wheeler led the dogs with perfect passing on the night, Cooper led the rushers and Wyckoff led the receivers in yardage. The White Pittbulls improved their record to 3-2 on the year and travel to Westville, OK next weekend to take on the Yellowjackets looking for a third consecutive victory on the year.

We appreciate and acknowledge our coaches Clint Watson, Josh Stewart, Brian Ulmer, Jim Wiley and Terrell King for the hard work and dedication to the team and program.

3rd Grade Blue takes on a older Union team

On Saturday night at Ramsey Jr. high the 3rd grade blue team took on a team of Union Cristian made up 3rd and 4th graders.

The game didnt start off great for our 3rd grade team when the first play from scrimage went the distance when the Union quaterback went on the snap count of down and took the Defense off guard.

But after that the 3rd grade blue settled down and started playing some defense. Although the score may say different these kids never quit and they never slowed down for coach Tate Cole.

The offense seemed to never hook up and get very far with this big and quick defense that Union fielded, seemed they knew the snap count.

Got to give it to the 3rd Grade Blue they faced a bigger and older Union team, but it was a great learning experince for all the kids. That will make them better down the road.

Good luck this Saturday Guys! See ya there…

5th Grade White Team Eradicates Van Buren:

5th Grade White Team Eradicates Van Buren:

Saturday October 11th, the 5th Grade Greenwood White Pittbulls hosted Van Buren Green at Smith Robinson Stadium. Coach Shawn Shaffer had the Pittbulls prepared for victory over the final Van Buren opponent.

The 5th grade White Pittbulls have established a history of dominance on the gridiron with gut wrenching tackles, downhill running and a superb passing game.  The Pittbulls are not perfect as they fumbled on their opening drive, setting up Van Buren with a short field, allowing them to score 6 points.  The PAT was stopped at the 3-yard line by Brian Pullen.  Having some trouble starting the offensive engine, the Pittbulls punt their second possession.  The Pittbull defense came up with a huge stop on 4th and 6 deep in Van Buren territory.  Andrew McGill takes the ball and rushes down to the 12-yard line.  The rush ended in a fumble and Van Buren recovered, however, Van Buren was unable to capitalize on the turnover.  In the 2nd quarter, #14 Noah Basham hooked up with Ryan Padilla for a 29-yard touchdown pass.  The PAT fell just short of the goal post, leaving the score tied at 6.  The Pittbulls take over at mid-field with 1:30 left in the first half.  The Pittbulls march down the field, flawlessly executing plays all the way.  After a late hit out of bounds by Van Buren, #21 Quinton Marrone barrels his was way up the middle for a touchdown.  The PAT was scored by Alex Elmore making the score 14 – 6, Pittbulls.

The Pittbulls open their second half with a combination of rushing and passing gains. Andrew McGill ran for a 28-yard first down gain, setting up an 11-yard passing touchdown when Noah Basham hooked up with Ryan Padilla.  Again, Alex Elmore’s PAT is successful, making the score 22 – 6, Pittbulls.  Not to be out done Van Buren returns the kickoff for a touchdown, however Quinton Marrone and Travis Freeman stop Van Buren on their PAT.  On the next possession, the Pittbulls march down to the 32-yard line, but are backed up to mid field by Van Buren.  Late in the 4th quarter, Van Buren completes a long, beautiful pass only to be run down by Mason Archer and Ryan Padilla.  On the very next play, deep in Pittbull territory, with a score by Van Buren eminent, Ryan Padilla takes away any potential of a momentum shift, making a huge defensive play.  He jumps in front of the Van Buren receiver, intercepts the ball and runs it back far a 77-yard touchdown; leaving the final score 28-12, Pittbulls win. The defense was led by Quinton Marrone with 11 tackles, followed closely by Brian Pullen, Travis Freeman, and Zac Childress with 9 tackles each.  The offense was led by Ryan Padilla with 144 yards receiving and rushing.

Defensive players of the week are Travis Freeman and Zac Childress. Offensive players of the week are Alex Elmore and Mason Archer.

The coaching staff is to be commended for the preparation of 10 and 11 year olds with the abilities to run the football, spread the offense, and complete some astonishing big yard gains through the air.  But that’s just the offense; the defense has shut out several opponents.  These are kids, learning the game and most importantly having fun and with the Pittbulls commitment to community service, our kids under the coach’s direction are learning how to respect themselves, each other, and their community.

4th Grade Blue Shuts out Union

4th Grade Blue Shuts out Union

Article by Brian and Kay Lynn Clay

The Greenwood 4th grade Blue Pittbulls did it again. They faced a worthy opponent who was working on an undefeated season. But Union Christian didn’t count on the determination of the Blue Pittbulls, who have not been beaten in two years.

Passing by Luke Hales to Solomon Gross, great runs by Matt Marquet and Cooper Van Kooten, and an offensive line that made it all happen – all of these elements produced a near flawless execution.

The Pittbulls scored on the opening drive and managed to eat up a lot of clock during the possession. First half score was 6-0 in favor of the Blue Pittbulls.

In the second half, Blue started off with the football but was forced to declare a punt with a 4th  and 3 yards to go. Union took over on their own 30 yard line but couldn’t get anything going offensively. Charlie Scott, Zach Turner, Carson Lloyd, and Hunter Heller all came together defensively to halt the Eagles at mid-field.

Greenwood’s next possession would eat up a lot of clock. Matt Marquet hit pay dirt with a 30 yard touch down to make the score 12-0. The extra point, attempted with a pass to Dakota Pinkston in the corner of the end zone, did not convert.

Blue Pittbulls remain unbeaten with three games to go. All three remaining games will be at home at Smith-Robinson Stadium. The next scheduled game is October 18 against Stilwell OK.

Great job on the win Guys! Keep up the good work…

6th Grade Blue Blows out Van Buren

The 6th grade Blue took on a good opponent in the final game of the night in Van Buren.

The game started quick with Greenwood Blue being led by Gavin Heller and Kevin Jones.

Both offenses had several big runs during the game, But in the end this Van Buren team although larger didnt have what it took to compete with the 6th grade Blue.

Kevin Jones and Gavin Heller kept the VB Defense on there heels all game, with the run pass threat. With all the long runs and time to pass during the game I would say the Offensive line came up big in this game.

On the Defensive side the Blue only allowed 12 points but the Van Buren Offense had a big line trying to make holes for there lightning quick running back. But he wasnt fast enough to out run one of the top defensive players on the 6th grade Blue team, Will Tedford. It seemed like

he was everywhere on the field. The D-line played tuff even though they seemed out sized, but in the end, the lines quickness was to much for the VB line.

Overall VB didnt have anything for our 6th grade Blue team, with the final score being 32-12.

Great job guys, see you in Ft. Smith Saturday

night.

On a perfect night for football The undefeated  5th  grade Greenwood Blue team totally dominated  From the opening kickoff.

The offense moved the ball up and down the field all night, behind the great O line of the 5th Blue. Dillon “D-mac” Mcbride  and Jax Burgess kept the VB defense out of sync all night, with quick hitting up the middle runs and sweeps to the outside.

The Defensive side,  was led by Kyle Rector and the run stopping D Line.

Kyle Rector stepped in and picked off a for sure first down throw from the VB quarterback and returned in for about 50 yards for a touchdown.

The D Line stepped up big.  They made the VB offense look like they hadn’t played all year. Overall the 5th grade blue team looked very good against a very good VB opponent.

White Sixth Grade Pittbulls Win Battle

The 6th Grade White rebounded from last week’s overtime loss with a shutout victory over the

injuries Van Buren Black team 8 to 0 at Smith Robinson Stadium. The Pittbulls overcame key personnel and scratched out a hard fought victory in a game that was a battle of field position.

With quarterback ,Reid Wheeler, sidelined, Tanner Wiley moved up from his tailback spot to fill in admirably while Jordan McKinley and Brandon Tolbert platooned at the tailback position along with always rock solid Tanner Cooper. The first half was highlighted by the two defenses as neither offense ever really got in a rhythm. Greenwood was led by Trey Hamilton who was playing thru an injury but still bringing the wood like a lumberjack. Also, the front line of Drew Ulmer, Tyler Cox, Nick Houston, Nick Walton and Seth Bland controlled the line of scrimmage. The men on the islands, the corners of Cooper and Ty Wyckoff, were diligent as always. While Greenwood, could not manage a serious threat in the first half. Van Buren did get one chance deep in Pittbull territory following a long penalty, but the Pittbulls resiliently kept the score knotted scoreless in the first half.

Due to a failed onside kick to start the second half, Van Buren enjoyed superior field position around the 50 yard line while Greenwood was held around inside the 30 yard line. Neither could manage a first down and the two teams traded punts all thru the third quarter. The game appeared to be headed to overtime for a second straight week. However, the fourth quarter belonged to Greenwood. Following a Van Buren, the Pittbulls went to work. Cooper took a handoff around the end for 4-5 yards and the Wiley would connect with Bland on a nice pass for a long gain. After a run was stuffed for a loss and an incomplete pass to Wyckoff, Wiley would dial up Bland again to overcome a long third & thirteen and would be enough to move the sticks. Greenwood was well across midfield and driving. Van Buren’s defense stiffened and after a big loss. The Pittbulls flipped the ends of the field after a punt with 4:03 to play in regulation. The Pointers took over.

Van Buren lined up with a deep pass but Hughes stepped up from his safety position to snag the interception. The Pittbulls were in business around the 29 yard line. After a four yard loss, Cooper would gain back five and Wiley wisely threw one away on third down. The drama was thick as the Pittbulls lined up with 2:24 and facing a fourth and nine. Coach Clint Watson signaled in the play and Wiley dropped back and threw a strike to a streaking Bland down the middle resulting in a first down and goal on the seven yard line. Cooper would take the next one in over the left side and make a brilliant run to the corner of the end zone. Drew Ulmer immediately added his first P.A.T kick and make the score 8 to nothing with 1:58 left. Van Buren would get the ball back with last chance around the 45 yard line but the Pittbulls were too much. Van Buren could not get a pass complete and Kyler Watson and Tyler Cox combined to make a big sack to preserve the win.

The Pittbulls moved to 2-2 in conference play and got back to their winning ways. The Pittbulls will host the Van Buren Green Saturday at 7:30pm.

5th Grade White Pittbull Defense Proves to be too much for the Pointers

Saturday October 4th, the Greenwood White Pittbulls hosted Van Buren Black at Smith Robinson Stadium. The Pittbulls were poised to get yet another victory over a Van Buren opponent.

The Pittbulls get the coin toss and elect to receive the ball first. With excellent field position the Pittbulls start marching down the field with an awesome display of pass and run plays that seem to have Van Buren’s defense confused from the start. Not giving up, the Van Buren coaching staff got the Pointers fired up in the red zone and stopped the mighty White Pittbulls from scoring on the opening drive.

After a brutal display of defensive power the Pointers are forced to punt the ball back to the Pittbulls.

Starting the 2nd quarter with a score 0-0 the Pittbulls made up some huge yardage with passing and running plays from #14 Noah Basham, #25 Ryan Padilla, and #21 Quinton Marrone. The Pittbulls squared off for another scoring attempt, when Ryan Padilla hooked up with Noah Basham for a 26 yard touch down pass bringing the score to 6-0.

On the ensuing kickoff the Pointers achieved great field position, and came out ready to march the ball down the field to try to even the score before half time. Unfortunately, for the Pointers, the Pittbulls quickly put pressure in the backfield and #25 Ryan Padilla forced a fumble which was quickly recovered by #21 Quinton Marrone.

Starting the 3rd quarter the Pittbulls, once again went to an aerial attack and ending up in the red zone, ready for yet another Pittbull touchdown. The Pointers made a strong defensive stand and took the Pittbulls to 4th and 10. Not giving up Noah Basham made a huge run up the middle for a first down, setting up a 6 yard Ryan Padilla touchdown run. Following the touchdown Alex Elmore made the PAT kick leaving the score 14-0.

With the look of desperation in the eyes of the Pointers they went to the air to try gain big yards, however Alex Elmore had other plans sacking the quarterback for an 8 yard loss. The 4th quarter was highlighted by a perfectly executed interception by Ryan Padilla.

The defense was led by Ryan Padilla with 6 tackles and 1 forced fumble and 2 interceptions, followed by Noah Basham and Quinton Marrone with 4 tackles each. Also contributing to the defense was Brian Pullen, Travis Freeman, Dustin McGowen, and Zac Childress.
