Bulldog pride starts here

3rd Grade Blue in a Thriller

Saturday, September 6th, 2008.  Opening day for Pittbulls Football

3rd Grade Blue answered the opening bell of football 2008 at 4:30 in Smith Robinson Stadium.  The Westville Yellow Jackets lined up across the field to give the Pittbulls a strong test for their first game of the season.

Westville brought a strong running game to Greenwood, lead by big #54 carrying the ball.  The Pittbull defense gang tackled well on most plays, but Westville’s #54 carried defenders on his way to the end zone.

Greenwood counter-punched with #47, Dylan Vota.  The speedy Pittbull Running Back juked and jived his way down the field, making cuts that left Westville defenders grasping at thin air.  Vota gained yards in huge chunks, with several runs of over 20 yards.

Greenwood also had a one-two combination punch with #89 Easton Barrett, and #12 Derek Loyd.    Barrett caught a great pass from QB Zane Harmon and crossed the goal line for a would be touchdown, called back for holding.  Derek Loyd ran wide sweeps and reverses, using his speed to get to the corner and turn upfield for some nice gains.

The Pittbulls battled back and forth with Westville, holding the lead until late in the 4th quarter.  Westville scored with 34 seconds left on the clock, getting the win 20-18.

The 3rd Grade Blue defense played tough, although outsized by some big kids from Westville.  Pittbulls #80 Bradyn Ketter got in on some good gang tackling, and made a solo tackle late in the 4th quarter to stop a big run.

Next week the Blue Pittbulls travel to Van Buren to take on Sallisaw with a 4:30 kickoff.  The 3rd Grade Blue Squad will look to rebound and even their record for the year.
