Bulldog pride starts here

White Pittbulls Muzzle Pointers

Article by Denny Bland

Saturday evening at Smith Robinson Stadium, the sixth grade White Pittbulls swept yet another Van Buren team by closing out the day’s slate against the Green team 16-6. The Pittbulls benefited greatly by a healthy return of several players and staked an early lead and then held on for the win.

The Pittbulls would recover a Pointer onside kick and immediately a healthy Reid Wheeler would take over the reigns on the offense. After both teams traded field positions in the opening frame, Greenwood would strike first in the second quarter. Greenwood used the ground attack of the “Tanners,” Cooper and Wiley, to set up the pass first from Wheeler to Kyler Watson on a good gain. Then, after a good 12 yard gain by Wiley. Wheeler would complete a strike to a wide open Seth Bland for six in the end zone. Tanner Wiley would add the PAT kick to notch the score 8 to zip.

On the defensive side, the Pittbulls did not allow much breathing room. The linebacker corps of Wiley, Trey Hamilton, Garrett Miller, Brandon Tolbert and Jordan McKinley enjoyed a steady diet of Pointer Green.

Hamilton especially ate them up like he was at an all you can eat buffet. Greenwood stuffed their opponent’s next drive and held on downs. Greenwood would go into the bag of tricks to catch a lackadaisical secondary napping. Facing a long third down, Wiley would take a pitch from Wheeler and air a long pass to a speedy Ty Wyckoff, for huge gain. Greenwood wasted no time as Cooper would find a nice size hole on the left and go in basically untouched for a 13 yard score. Drew Ulmer added the PAT to make it 16 to 0 to close out the scoring for the half.

Following halftime, the Pittbulls went on cruise control. Van Buren controlled the ball the whole third quarter while several Pittbulls got some much deserved playing time. Hayden Keith, Nick DeMaria, Mason Cantrell, Jerod Powell, Andrew Wise, Zac Wood, Jarrett Sebo, Evan McClure and Tristan Brasher were just a few contributors on the that saw significant action. Offensively, Greenwood put the brakes on and with limited snaps did not really sniff the end zone again. Perhaps, Greenwood called the dogs off a little early as Van Buren would score late on a long pass to make it 16-6 as the PAT failed. Then recovered an onsides kick and threatened yet again before the Pittbulls squashed the drive to preserve the win.

Offensively, Wheeler led the dogs with perfect passing on the night, Cooper led the rushers and Wyckoff led the receivers in yardage. The White Pittbulls improved their record to 3-2 on the year and travel to Westville, OK next weekend to take on the Yellowjackets looking for a third consecutive victory on the year.

We appreciate and acknowledge our coaches Clint Watson, Josh Stewart, Brian Ulmer, Jim Wiley and Terrell King for the hard work and dedication to the team and program.
